SWIFT CODE is recognized as a BANK IDENTIFIER CODE (BIC) used to specify a particular bank or branch when transferring money between banks, mostly for international wire transfer.
A BIC/SWIFT CODE is usually of 8-11 character code, the codes represent bank code, country code, location code and branch code.
- Bank code XXXX – represents the bank, usually a short version of the bank’s name
- Country code YY – represents the country the bank is in
- Location code ZZ – states where the bank head office is, usually made up of letters or numbers
- Branch code 123 – represents the particular branch the transaction is carried out.
Nigeria bank BIC/SWIFT CODE usually consists of either 8 or 11 characters. When it is 8, it means the branch the transaction is been carried out is the bank’s head office; when is 11, it means it is for the bank branch office. Banks use these codes to exchange messages between themselves.
