Zippers can be troublesome when they exhibit common issues like separation, sticking, or sliding open. Yet, several methods can effectively address a malfunctioning zipper.
3 Ways to Fix a Stuck Zipper
Dealing with a stuck zipper? Various approaches can help you get it moving smoothly:
1. Utilize a graphite pencil: Begin by rubbing the tip of a graphite pencil along the closed zipper teeth, attempting to maneuver the zipper down.
2. Apply bar soap or wax: Use a lubricating substance like soap, chapstick, or lip balm to make the teeth more slippery and facilitate smoother movement.
3. Use petroleum jelly: As a last resort, apply a small amount of petroleum jelly to lubricate the zipper teeth, making it easier to release the stuck zipper. Note: If the zipper is part of a fabric item, clean the jelly properly to avoid greasy stains.

How to Fix a Zipper That Keeps Sliding Open
When the zipper’s locking mechanism is out of place, your zipper might have trouble staying zipped. You may encounter this problem more often on clothing items that get a lot of wear and tear. Unless you replace the zipper entirely, there’s no real permanent fix for this problem.
However, if this issue is happening on a pair of pants, a temporary solution is to use household items like a key ring or rubber band to fasten to the end of the zipper and loop it around the pants button to keep it up (you can also use this method to make a new zipper pull).
For other articles of clothing, another temporary fix is to try using sticky hairspray to cause a buildup in the teeth, making it harder to fall.

How to Fix a Separated Zipper
A separated zipper doesn’t necessarily mean it’s broken. Try these solutions:
a. Check the zipper slider: If the zipper doesn’t stay attached, inspect the slider openings for stretching. Use pliers to gently squeeze the openings without closing them entirely.
b. Align the zipper teeth: Misaligned or bent zipper teeth can cause separation. Use needle-nose pliers to straighten them for a smoother slide.
c. Reinsert the slider: If previous adjustments fail, restart the process. For metal zippers, remove the top stops, slide off the zipper, realign the teeth, and reinsert the slider. For plastic zippers, this method won’t work with stops. Stretch the metal stoppers’ openings, remove the slider, realign the teeth, and reassemble the zipper. Once the slider moves smoothly, reattach the top stops gently.
