IKEDC Prepaid Meter Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Prepaid meter has come to give more accountability to the consumption of power in homes, offices and every other type of building.

Today we’ll be providing answers to all your Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IKEDC) prepaid meter related question.

How to get IKEDC prepaid meter 

Follow the steps mentioned below to get your IKEDC prepaid meter;

1. Click here to visit the IKEDC website 

2. If you’re an old customer, enter your account number, password and click login on the returning customer section. But if you’re a new customer, simply enter your account number and click search on the new login section. 

3. Complete the KYC form by entering your information as requested.

4. Follow through with IKEDC instructions.

How to activate a prepaid meter for the first time

If you are reading this, I believe you have gotten and installed your prepaid meter at your home, office or any other building.

At the stage of getting your prepaid meter, you were given 3 sets of numbers from IKEDC (If you were not given, please head back to their office to get yours).

From the 3 sets of numbers you were given, the first number (which is 11 digits) is your meter number while the 2nd and 3rd (20 digits each) are the activation code that you will use in linking your account number to your meter.

Follow the steps mentioned below to activate your IKEDC prepaid meter for the first time;

1. Enter the first 11 number which is also your meter number

2. Press the red button

3. Wait to see CONNECT and then SUCCESS displayed on the screen of your prepaid meter 

4. Enter the second set of numbers (this is in 20 digits) 

5. Press the red button 

6. Wait to see CONNECT and a beep

7. Then enter the last set of numbers (this is also in 20 digits) 

8. Press the red button

9. Wait to see CONNECT and then SUCCESS displayed on the screen.

Congratulations, you have finally activated your prepaid meter.

Why is a prepaid meter rejecting token?

At the point of activation, a prepaid meter can reject the activation token if:

1. The wrong meter number is entered into the prepaid meter

2. The prepaid meter is faulty

3. Also if there is a change in the tariff index.

How to check your prepaid meter balance

Follow the steps mentioned below to check your prepaid meter balance;

1. Enter 07 on your prepaid meter keypad

2. Press the blue button.

3. Your prepaid meter balance will be displayed on your screen in this format (150.15).

How many digits is a prepaid meter number?

A prepaid meter number is always in 11 digits and can be found on the display screen of your prepaid meter.

What happens if you bypass your prepaid meter?

Your prepaid meter can be bypassed by moving, connecting and disconnecting live electrical wires.

However, this is not advisable as it is against the law. It can also result in an electric shock or electrical fire.

How to silence inhemeter or mute your prepaid meter beeping sound

Yes, the beeping sound coming from the prepaid meter can be annoying when it interrupts a sleeping or studying session.

To silence or mute the sound, simply walk up to where your prepaid meter is, press 045 on the keypad and press the red button. 

What does 30 mean on a prepaid meter?

The number 30 displays on the prepaid meter when there is an error while loading the prepaid unit.

How to fix ERROR-3O on a prepaid meter

ERROR-30 simply means your keypad cannot communicate with the prepaid meter.

To fix this, follow the steps mentioned below;

1. Unplug your keypad from its current source of power and plug it into another source

2. Unplug all electrical appliances near the keypad

3. Disconnect other household electrical appliances one after the other and switch on your prepaid meter to see if it’s a particular electrical appliance that is causing the error 

4. Switch off all fluorescent lamps.

If the problem persists after doing all this, get in contact with IKEDC. 

Can a magnet slow down a digital electric meter?

Electricity bypassers once said placing a magnet on a prepaid meter can slow down the spinning meter wheel that measures the consumption of electricity.

However, new digital smart meters are more advanced and as such, they are not influenced by magnets.
