What is a routing number?
A routing number, also known as an ABA (American Bankers Association) number or routing transit number (RTN), is a nine-digit numerical code used in the United States to identify a specific financial institution. This unique identifier is essential for various financial transactions, particularly electronic transfers and direct deposits.
The routing number serves the purpose of directing funds to the correct banking institution when a transaction occurs. It is commonly used for:
1. Direct Deposits: Employers use routing numbers to facilitate direct deposits of employees’ salaries into their bank accounts.
2. Wire Transfers: When individuals or businesses transfer money electronically between banks, the routing number helps ensure the funds reach the intended recipient.
3. Automatic Bill Payments: When setting up automatic bill payments or recurring transfers, the routing number is required to link the bank account to the payment service.
4. Check Processing: The routing number is part of the magnetic ink character recognition (MICR) line on checks. It helps in processing checks and ensuring the money is withdrawn from the correct account.
The nine-digit routing number is typically found at the bottom-left corner of checks issued by a bank. It’s important to note that different types of transactions might require different routing numbers. For example, wire transfers often use a different routing number than the one on your checks.

How to Find Your Routing Number
1. The U.S Bank Mobile App:
There are two ways to find your routing number in the U.S. Bank Mobile App.
The easiest way is to open the app and select U.S. Bank Smart Assistant. Then say, “What’s the routing number for my checking account?”
You can also find it by following these directions:
1. Log into your account and select the desired account.
2. Select the Account options link (below the available balance).
3. Select Account information.
4. You’ll see the last four digits of your account number which links to the full account number and the routing number.
2. Online banking:
Find your routing number via online banking by logging into online banking and selecting the applicable account. You’ll see in the top box the account nickname, the last four digits of your account number and the routing number. If you also need the full account number, just select the last four digits link.
3. Your monthly statement:
Your routing number is in the upper right corner of your monthly statement. You can make sure your monthly statement is always at your fingertips with e-statements.
4. Your checkbook:
The routing number is the nine-digit number printed in the bottom left corner of each check. Your specific account number (usually 10 to 12 digits) is the second set of numbers printed on the bottom of your checks. The number furthest to the right is the check number.
