What Are Layers?
A layer is simply one image stacked on top of another; it can contain a vector shape, text, a photograph, or an illustrated character.
Layers in Illustrator and Photoshop allow you to manage multiple elements that make up an image when creating visual compositions.
They provide a convenient way to organize individual components in the overall scene so that they are positioned correctly and stacked in a specific order.

Know Your Layer Panel
Photoshop’s Layers Panel is a powerful tool that allows you to do a variety of things with your layed compositions. The Photoshop layers palette will be examined next.
Layer Filter: This allows you to hide layers based on various criteria, It makes it easier to locate the layers you want to work with.
Opacity: 0 = transparent, 100 = completely opaque.
To instantly set to multiples of 10, press the number keys on the keyboard, or adjust the slider for an exact amount of transparency on each layer.
Blend Modes: Modify these to alter how the selected layer blends with the layers beneath it. This is ideal for compositing and special effects. While using the move tool, press Shift+ or Shift- to cycle through blending modes.
Fill Opacity: Changes the opacity of the pixels only; any layer styles are unaffected and remain completely opaque.

Visibility: If the eye can see the layer, it is visible. When you click on the eye, the layer remains but is now invisible until you click on it again.
Locked: The padlock indicates that something in the layer is locked. (Also, in the “lock” next to fill opacity, click the four icons to make certain things editable or locked). Here are the various items that can be locked or unlocked.
Lock all: When this box is checked, the layer is completely protected from editing.
Lock Position: You can make any changes except for moving the image.
Lock Image pixels: You cannot draw on this layer if checked.
Lock transparent: You can paint on this layer but not where it is transparent.
Useful tools at the bottom of the panel
Link: Allows you to connect layers. Unless unlinked, these will all move together.

Layer Effects (Styles): These are special effects that are applied to your image layer. As indicated by the small f. Each effect will be listed separately. Multiple effects can be used at the same time.
Add Layer Mask: Use this button to apply a layer mask to the currently selected layer. Allows you to paint over portions of your layer without affecting the original image.
The best way to apply image adjustments is to add an adjustment layer. An image’s color or tone can be altered. Underneath an adjustment layer, all layers are affected (Unless clipped). Because adjustment layers are non-destructive and re-editable, this is a better option than using Image>Adjustments.
Layer Groups are an excellent organizational tool. Layers are saved in a folder as a result of this. You can group multiple layers by pressing Cmd/Ctrl+G, or you can create a group by clicking this icon. Layers in the Layers panel can be dragged into and out of groups.
Make a New Layer: Click this icon to make a new layer. If you drag an existing layer into this icon, it will be duplicated.
Delete Layer: To remove a layer, drag it into this icon. Alternatively, select the layer and then press this icon to achieve the same result.
Panel Options: This will open a drop down menu that provides several options, many that aren’t listed anywhere else.

Steps On How To Merge Layers In Illustrator
When merging layers in Illustrator, there are three steps to take:
1. Choose the layers to be merged
2. Go to the settings menu
3. Merge
1. Choose the layers to be merged: Determine which layers to merge and select them from the layer window. Hold Ctrl and left click on the layer you want to merge to select multiple layers at once.
2. Go to the settings menu: Right-clicking will not bring up the options menu that we require, as it does in Photoshop. Instead, in Illustrator, click the menu icon in the upper-right corner of the Layers window box.
3. Merge: Once you’ve selected all of the layers, go to “Layers Panel Options,” which you can access by clicking on the panel’s right corner, and then select “Merge Selected.”
And there you have it! You’ve successfully joined the layers, and you can do so as many times as you need within the same file.
The more layers you need to organize, the more complex or large your file will be.
