Unfamiliar file types are the bane of the existence of many computer users. With so many different file extensions in use for so many different purposes, encountering something with a.srt extension can feel like a headache waiting to happen. The good news is that SRT files are a type of subtitle file that works in conjunction with a video file to provide captions on-screen when the video is played.

Opening one of these files is possible using a word processing program or a video-playing program such as Windows Media Player or the third-party VLC Media Player. Understanding the file type and how to open it with various programs allows you to access the subtitles for your video.

How to Open a SRT File in VLC Media Player

VLC Media Player is a versatile free media player that can play a variety of video and file formats. It’s also one of the best programs to use if you’re having trouble opening a subtitle file in another program because it allows you to easily add any subtitle file to the currently playing video.

In VLC, open the video file with the subtitles, right-click the screen, and select Subtitle and Add Subtitle File from the options that appear. This opens a dialogue box in which you can navigate your computer’s folders and locate the SRT file. Select the appropriate file, then bring up the same right-click menu and ensure that the file is selected under the Sub Track menu.

How to Open an SRT File in Windows Media Player

Windows Media Player comes standard with Windows PCs, but it’s not as simple to open an SRT file with the program because there isn’t a dedicated option to add it to a video. However, if the subtitle file is in the same folder as the video and has the same file name (excluding the.srt extension), the program may detect it automatically. Right-click the screen, select Lyrics, captions, and subtitles, and then On if available.

If this does not work, you will need to take some additional steps. Install DirectVobSub after downloading it. Try the video again after making the same changes to the file name and folder as described above.

If that doesn’t work, you’ll need to get Shark007’s Advanced codec and install it. Launch the 64-bit or 32-bit Settings application as administrator, depending on your computer, and navigate to the tab for the file type of the video you’re watching (MPG/MP4 or MKV, for example). Check the box next to Disable Media Foundation for [file type], then go to the Swap tab and check the box next to Disable Windows Media Foundation. When you click Exit, your subtitles should start working.
